Travel to the IBME

By air

The most convenient arrival airport is London Heathrow (LHR), from which there is a frequent express coach service to Oxford (see below). London Gatwick is further, but again there is direct coach service to and from Oxford. Birmingham International has a less frequent coach and rail connection with Oxford. The local Oxford airport (in Kidlington) also offers a limited number of flights to UK and overseas destinations.

Travelling to Oxford from the airport:

By rail

There are frequent direct trains from London Paddington and regular links from the north via Birmingham, from the south via Reading, and from the west via Didcot.

Useful rail links:

By coach

There are very frequent services from London Victoria Coach Station and from Heathrow and Gatwick Airports. A rather less frequent service connects with Birmingham International airport. There are connections with many other parts of the country, including a direct service from Cambridge. Many of these coaches will drop off at the Thornhill Park & Ride from which the local 900 bus service can be used for travelling to Churchill Drive, Headington, which is a short 5 mins from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Old Road Campus Research Building (Please note: the 900 service is only available for peak periods during the day).

Useful bus/coach links:

By private car

Oxford can be reached by way of the M40, leaving at Junction 9 from the north and at Junction 8 from London and the south-east, by the A34 from the south, or by the A40 from the west. The A4260 and the A44 also give access from the north, and the A420 from the southwest.

There are five large "Park and Ride" areas on the city approaches with frequent bus services into the city centre. The “Park and Ride” at Thornhill should be used as it is from here that the Service 900 bus can be caught for onward travel to the Churchill Hospital (stopping at the entrance driveway to Roosevelt Drive (leading to Old Road Campus), which is just 5 mins from the Old Road Campus Research Building in which the IBME is housed.

By public transport or taxi

The IBME Department is in Headington, Oxford and this is approximately 2 miles from the City Centre. There is a taxi rank at the railway station and a bus service to the Old Road Campus site. The number 4 bus - see Oxford Bus Company can be caught from central Oxford and will take you to Old Road, near the main Churchill hospital site, which is close to the IBME, Old Road Campus.

Those who come to Oxford by car are encouraged to use one of the "Park and Ride" areas on or near the ring road. The Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME) and the Orthopaedic Engineering Centre (both in Headington) can be reached from either the east or the north while avoiding the city centre. Visitors who arrive by car should be aware that on-road parking near the Institute is very difficult, and unauthorized parking on the Old Road Campus site is prohibited. In some cases a short-stay parking permit can be arranged in advance by your host.

Disabled parking: Parking for orange or blue badge holders is free of charge. Disabled parking and areas for setting down and collecting are available close to entrances.
