Sylvia Rueda

Sylvia Rueda graduated with a dual B.S. Degree in Telecommunications Engineering from the Technical University of Valencia (U.P.V.), Spain, and the Ecole Nationale des Telecommunications de Bretagne (Telecom Bretagne), France, in 2003, where she specialised on signal and image processing. Sylvia received the M.Sc. degree in Signal, Telecommunications, Image, and Radar from Telecom Bretagne in 2003.

From this date and until 2006, she worked as a Research Associate at the Medical Image Computing Laboratory (MedICLab), Spain, in collaboration with the company 3DENT, which focused on dental applications. Sylvia was involved in the development of a commercial system for the automatic cephalometric landmark detection in lateral x-rays of the skull using Active Appearance Models. 

In 2006, Sylvia was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship for Early Research Training to do her PhD at the School of Computer Science, University of Nottingham, in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Philadelphia. She was supervised by Jayaram K. Udupa (MIPG, Dep. of Radiology, UPenn) and Tony Pridmore (University of Nottingham). She was a visiting scholar at the MIPG, Radiology Department, UPenn, Philadelphia in 2009 and graduated in 2010.

In 2008, she was awarded the Google Anita Borg Scholarship for Women in Computer Science.

Sylvia is currently a postdoctoral researcher on Personalised Perinatal Monitoring at the Centre of Excellence in Personalised Healthcare funded by the Wellcome Trust and the EPSRC, Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford and an invited lecturer at the MSc Neuroimaging at Kings College London. She aims at finding new fetal functional and nutritional indicators of fetal and neonatal growth using ultrasound images.

Her current research interests are in the areas of image segmentation, shape description and modelling, pattern recognition, and statistical models.
