Gert Mertes DPhil

Postdoctoral Researcher


Gert received his BSc and MSc in Electronics, Engineering, and Technology from KU Leuven, Belgium and subsequently joined the department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) at KU Leuven for his PhD.

His doctoral research focussed on sensor technology and machine learning techniques for the monitoring of ingestive behaviour in older adults via wearable devices. His research also saw the development of a novel sensor system for the detection of food bites during unrestricted eating, to be used by older adults in the prevention of malnutrition, and for prevention and treatment of obesity in young adults.

Research Interests

Gert's research interests include machine learning for healthcare, biological signal processing, wearable devices, and remote patient monitoring.
